About the Grass Carp

The grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) cuts a striking figure in the turbid waters of the Pacific Far East, its elongated, chubby, torpedo-shaped body cloaked in dark olive that fades to brownish-yellow along the flanks and a crisp white belly. A terminal, slightly oblique mouth bears firm, non-fleshy lips and a full lateral line of 40-42 scales, while broad, ridged pharyngeal teeth arranged in a “2, 4-4, 2” formula grind the abundant vegetation that defines its diet. Growing with astonishing speed, a spring-stocked juvenile of 20 cm (7.9 in) can exceed 45 cm (18 in) by autumn, typical adults reach 60–100 cm (23.5–39.5 in), and the largest individuals stretch to 2.0 m (6.6 ft) and weigh 45 kg (99 lb). In its native range, from northern Vietnam to the Amur River on the Sino-Russian border, grass carp linger in large, slow-flowing rivers, floodplain lakes, and backwaters, where they feast on higher aquatic plants, submerged terrestrial vegetation, detritus, insects and other invertebrates, sometimes consuming up to three times their own body weight each day. A surprising trait is their reproductive precision: eggs, slightly heavier than water, must remain suspended in turbulent, fast-moving rivers; if they sink, development fails, limiting natural colonisation to only six of the many northern rivers where they have been stocked. This exacting requirement has turned the species into a double-edged sword, an effective biocontrol for invasive weeds yet a potential ecological disruptor when it does manage to reproduce in new waters.
