About the Cape Galaxias

The Cape galaxias (Galaxias zebratus) glides through the clear streams of South Africa’s Western Cape as a silvery, scaleless ribbon, rarely exceeding 6 cm in length. Its slender, cylindrical body is framed by a single dorsal fin set well back on the back, bearing nine to thirteen soft rays, and a matching anal fin. The fish’s translucent skin reveals internal organs, giving it an almost ethereal appearance as it darts among pebbles and submerged vegetation. A surprising trait is its ability to tolerate both crystal-clear mountain streams with low mineral content and murkier lowland waters rich in dissolved minerals, a flexibility that hints at hidden ecological niches within its fragmented range. Endemic to the African continent, the Cape galaxias was first recorded in the Cape Flats in 1861 and was long thought to inhabit only the Western Cape between the Keurbooms and Olifants Rivers. Since 1995, however, it has turned up in the Krom River and the Gamtoos River system of the Eastern Cape, suggesting a broader, though still patchy, distribution. Its habitat, clear streams, rivers and ponds, has become increasingly shared with introduced trout and bass, turning the galaxias into prey and driving its numbers down around Cape Town. The fish’s delicate nature and limited size make it a subtle indicator of water quality, yet its very presence is now a fragile whisper in a landscape reshaped by human-introduced predators.
