• At up to 33 centimetres long, the gumboot chiton is the largest chiton on Earth — a living tank plated in eight overlapping shells that slide like armour as it clings to rocks. The outer shell is covered in a rubbery, wart-like tissue that looks more leather jacket than animal, which is where its common name comes from. This coating is so unusual that scientists are still studying what it does, but it appears to absorb impacts and resist predators in ways that bare shell cannot.
• A gumboot chiton's foot is a single, muscular disc that operates like a suction cup with 25,000 tiny teeth. Those teeth — called radula — scrape algae and diatoms off rock surfaces with such precision the chiton can remove a micro-thin layer without gouging the stone. The foot produces a sticky secretion that glues it so firmly to rock that a grown human cannot pull one free without tools.
• Unlike most animals, the gumboot chiton has no brain. Instead, a nerve ring encircles its mouth and sends signals down eight ganglia (nerve clusters) along its body, creating a nervous system with no central command centre. It can still sense light, touch, and chemical cues — essentially 'thinking' with its whole body at once.
• Gumboot chitons can live for at least 20 years, making them among the longest-lived invertebrates in shallow marine ecosystems. They move just centimetres per day, spending weeks grazing the same patch of rock, which means a single chiton may shape the algae ecology of its territory across two decades.
• The gumboot chiton's sperm travel through water to find eggs, yet some populations breed together so reliably that eggs and sperm meet in the same spot at the same time every year — a behaviour biologists do not yet fully understand. This timing is so precise it suggests an internal calendar synced to ocean conditions, tides, or moon phases in ways we're still decoding.
