• At up to 36 cm (14 in) long and weighing more than 2 kg (4.4 lb), the gumboot chiton dwarfs every other chiton, stretching across the rocky shores from Central California to Alaska, across the Aleutian chain to Kamchatka and down to Japan. Its massive, leathery girdle.
• The gumboot's radula is lined with rows of magnetite-tipped teeth, making each tooth hard enough to sand algae off stone. To stay clean in these crowded conditions, they secrete a mucus that swells on contact with water, forming a slippery coat that covers the entire girdle and prevents algae, barnacles, or parasites from sticking.
