• Grey reef sharks spend their entire lives in the same 40-square-kilometre patch of ocean—a territory they defend with displays so aggressive that divers call it the 'agonistic display,' an arched-back, lowered-fin posture that means: leave now. They are among the few sharks that stay put rather than roam, and their fidelity to home is so strong that removing them from their reef is often fatal; they refuse to settle elsewhere.
• In a split second, a grey reef shark accelerates from stationary to 11 metres per second—faster than most fish can react. Their teeth are triangular saw-blades arranged in rows that rotate forward as they bite, so losing one costs nothing; a fresh blade slides into place within days. A single shark may shed 24,000 teeth across its lifetime, yet never runs short.
• The grey reef shark's eye contains a mirror-like layer called a tapetum lucidum that bounces light back through photoreceptors twice, multiplying light sensitivity in the dim reef twilight where they hunt. In near-total darkness they can still spot a contrasting object the size of a marble from 2 metres away—a visual prowess that lets them hunt in depths where most competitors are blind.
• Female grey reef sharks practice polyandry, mating with multiple males in a single breeding season and storing their sperm for months before fertilising eggs at will. This strategy lets them fertilise different batches of pups with different fathers, hedging genetic bets in an uncertain reef environment and producing more resilient offspring than monogamous sharks can achieve.
• Since the 1970s, grey reef shark numbers on reefs where they are heavily fished have crashed by up to 97 percent—a collapse that destabilises entire ecosystems, because these apex predators control mid-level predators and herbivores indirectly by hunting and scavenging. Their endangered status today reflects not extinction risk, but a brutal arithmetic: they grow slowly, breed rarely, and live 25 years, making recovery from overfishing a problem measured in human generations, not years.
