- Golden snub-nosed monkeys live high up where most hikers gasp, between 1,500 m and 3,400 m (4,900-11,200 ft) above sea level. Snow falls often in this range, yet they tolerate colder average temperatures better than any other non-human primate, letting them survive winters that would freeze out most monkeys.
- Across three subspecies, the golden snub-nose totals roughly 14,000-15,000 individuals. The Moupin group alone holds about 10,000 monkeys, 6,000 in the Min Mountains, 3,500 in Qionglai, and 500 in Daxiangling and Xiaoxiangling. The Qinling subspecies adds 3,800-4,000, while the Hubei form ranges from 600 to 1,000, growing from 500 in 1990 to over 1,200 by 2005. These numbers show a fragmented but sizable population that still needs coordinated protection across provinces.
- Group size swings dramatically, from tiny units of 5-10 individuals to massive bands of about 600 monkeys. To support such numbers, they claim home ranges as large as 40 square kilometres (15 sq mi). At night they huddle in larger sleeping clusters than by day, most often adult females with their young, a strategy that conserves heat and deters predators. This flexible social and spatial organization lets them thrive in a seasonally harsh mountain environment.

In Shennongjia Reserve, they eat mostly lichens from November through April, switch to a mix of leaves and lichens May-July, then add fruits or seeds August-October. - Adult golden snub-nosed males stand 58-68 cm tall and weigh about 16.4 kg, while females are markedly smaller at 47-52 cm and roughly 9.4 kg.
