Fascinating facts about the Mainland Serow

• In the Nepal Himalayas, mainland serow favor elevations between 2,500 m and 3,500 m (8,200-11,500 ft), a band roughly the height of the tallest skyscrapers stacked together. Below that, in Assam, they retreat to as low as 100 m (330 ft) in winter, swapping alpine cliffs for lowland forests.
• Male serow sport light-colored horns just 150 mm (6 in) long, curving slightly backward, while both sexes stand about 91 cm (3 ft) at the shoulder and tip the scales at roughly 91 kg (200 lb).
• Female serow carry a single kid after about eight months of pregnancy. With only one offspring per year.
• Only male mainland serows grow horns, and these are light-coloured and about 150 mm long, curving slightly toward the back. The horns are a distinctive feature that females completely lack, making the sexes easy to tell apart in the field. Like the rest of the animal, a male stands roughly 91 cm at the shoulder and weighs around 91 kg, giving the modest horns a sturdy frame for the species.
