• Palmer's chipmunk exists only on a single mountain range in southern Nevada — Mount Charleston, barely 50 kilometres wide — making it one of North America's most geographically isolated mammals. Fewer than 2,000 individuals remain, confined to forests at 2,400 metres elevation where temperatures plunge to -15°C in winter. A single wildfire or drought could erase the species entirely.
• These chipmunks are trapped in a shrinking island of forest: as climate warms, their pine and spruce habitat creeps upslope, squeezing them into an ever-smaller sliver near the summit. Over the past 60 years, their range has contracted by roughly one-third. They can't migrate elsewhere — the hot, bare desert surrounding Mount Charleston is a death sentence for a cold-adapted rodent built for alpine forest.

For decades it was lumped with the Alpine chipmunk, a larger relative found in California. DNA later proved it had diverged on Mount Charleston long enough to be wholly distinct.
