Fascinating facts about the Giraffe

• A giraffe's heart weighs 11 kilograms and pumps blood up 2 metres into the brain — a pressure so extreme that when a giraffe bends to drink, special one-way valves in its neck snap shut to stop blood pooling in its head and causing a stroke. No other land animal has solved the engineering problem of feeding a brain at that altitude.
• Giraffes haven't been seen to sleep for more than 10 minutes at a time, totalling just 30 minutes a day — less than a tenth of what lions rest. They evolved this razor-thin sleep window because lying down on the savanna takes 60 vulnerable seconds, and standing back up takes another 30. In that window, a predator can close in fast.
• A giraffe's tongue is 45 centimetres long and prehensile like a monkey's finger — it can curl around thorny acacia branches, strip leaves, and even clean inside its own ears. The tongue is dark purple, an adaptation that protects it from sunburn during hours of feeding high in the canopy where UV exposure is relentless.
• Male giraffes establish dominance through 'necking' — swinging their heads like 40-kilogram sledgehammers at each other's bodies and skulls until one retreats. The impact can be heard from a kilometre away. Young males start practising on trees at age four; by adulthood, their skulls thicken to 5 centimetres to absorb the blows.
• A calf drops nearly 2 metres to the ground at birth — the fall helps drain fluid from its lungs so it can breathe. Within an hour, the newborn can stand and run, a survival strategy that evolved because giraffe mothers cannot fight, only flee. In the Serengeti today, giraffe populations have crashed 40 percent in two decades due to habitat loss and poaching, making their ancient design for open grasslands increasingly obsolete.
