- Fremont's squirrel is a true mountain specialist, living only in the high-altitude zones of the southwestern United States. It belongs to the pine-squirrel genus and spends its life in the trees of those lofty forests. The species largely inhabits mixed coniferous and spruce-fir forests, and it will only occasionally wander into ponderosa pine stands. Where the higher-elevation spruce-fir and mixed coniferous habitat is absent, the squirrel does not occur at all.
- For many years this squirrel was lumped together with the American red squirrel, but a 2016 phylogenetic study provided enough genetic evidence to treat it as a separate species. The researchers showed clear differences that warranted a taxonomic split, ending the previous conspecific view. The American Society of Mammalogists formally accepted the study's conclusions, cementing its status as a distinct species.
- The Mount Graham red squirrel is recognised as a distinct subspecies of Fremont's squirrel and is already considered endangered. This subspecies, T. grahamensis, lives on a single mountain range and faces severe threats from habitat loss and limited gene flow. Conservation assessments highlight its precarious status, noting that it is one of the few remaining populations of the species.
