• Only about one-third of Daurian pikas make it through a winter when they have their own haypiles, but survival plunges to just five percent if those piles are taken away, forcing the population into massive boom-and-bust cycles that are offset by their ability to produce several litters a year, sometimes with up to eleven babies in a single litter. This extreme reliance on stored forage shows how a single behavioral adaptation can dictate the species' whole demographic strategy.
• A Daurian pika's summer work results in roughly ten haypiles per burrow system, each built from cut grasses whose ends point upward to speed drying.
