• A mountain cottontail's ears are packed with blood vessels so dense they function as a heat radiator — in summer heat, blood floods the ears to dump excess warmth; in winter, blood flow retreats inward to preserve it. This biological thermostat keeps a 600-gram rabbit alive across temperature swings of 40°C or more in the same season.
