• The Alpine shrew's heart beats 1,200 times per minute — faster than a hummingbird's. At just 5 grams, it must eat nearly its own body weight in insects and earthworms every day or starve within hours. This is what living on a knife's edge looks like: a creature that cannot afford to miss a single meal.
• High in the Alps, where temperatures plummet below freezing, the Alpine shrew stays active under the snow. It creates tunnels through leaf litter and soil, hunting in permanent darkness where other predators cannot follow. This hidden world of shrews — bustling while the mountain sleeps — exists just centimetres below our feet.
• Born in summer at 2,500 metres elevation, a young Alpine shrew has only 16 weeks to grow, breed, and prepare before winter arrives. Most don't survive their first season. Those that do rarely live past 18 months — a compressed life cycle where everything happens in fast-forward.
• Alpine shrews navigate their mountain homes using scent trails and echolocation clicks so faint humans cannot hear them.
