• Adults stretch 70-80 cm from nose to tail base and tip the scales at 5.5-8.6 kg, with males edging larger. Their semi-retractable claws and ultra-flexible ankles let them scramble head-first up trunks and launch between trees, turning the forest into a three-dimensional hunting arena. This blend of cat-like size and squirrel-like agility lets the fossa chase agile lemurs through the canopy.
• Over half of every fossa meal is lemur meat, a proportion that climbs to more than 50 % of vertebrate prey in some studies. One analysis showed vertebrates made up 94 % of its diet, with lemurs alone accounting for over half, while tenrecs, lizards and birds filled the rest.
• A male's territory can span up to 26 km² (10 sq mi), double the 13 km² (5 sq mi) range of a female, and these home ranges overlap by about 30 %. Radio-collared individuals trek 2-5 km each day, yet one was recorded covering a straight-line 7 km in just 16 hours.
• Fossas give birth to one-to-six blind, toothless pups after a three-month gestation; newborns weigh about 100 g. The young cling to their mother for 4.5 months before weaning, stay protected until 15-20 months, and only reach sexual maturity at three to four years (≈1,500 days).
• Fossas are reduced from forest edges where stray dogs linger and cats wander up to 5 km (3 mi) into the interior, hunting lemurs. A 2017 study found native carnivore numbers, including fossas, drop near villages with abundant dogs. This indirect pressure from domestic animals shrinks the fossa's already sparse populations, highlighting the need for community-based sterilisation and vaccination programs.
