• A sea lion can hold its breath for 20 minutes and dive to 600 metres — depths where the pressure would crush a human like a tin can — yet return to the surface with barely elevated heart rate. Their blood is packed with a protein called myoglobin that stores oxygen like a molecular sponge, and their spleen contracts during dives to release extra red blood cells. This isn't superhero fiction; it's why they hunt squid in the midnight zone where sunlight never reaches.
