• A purple shore crab's blood runs blue. Hemocyanin, a copper-based protein, carries oxygen through their veins instead of iron-based hemoglobin. When exposed to air, it turns their blood the colour of a bruise — a visible reminder that these crabs are built for a world humans can barely survive in.
• Females lay up to 185,000 eggs in a single brood, yet fewer than one in a million will reach adulthood. Most die as planktonic larvae, drifting helplessly in the open ocean for weeks. The few that make it back to the rocky shore have already survived odds that would obliterate 99.9999% of their siblings.
• Purple shore crabs split in half to escape. When a predator grabs a leg, muscles at the base tear in a controlled break called autotomy. The crab walks away on five legs while the severed limb twitches on the beach — a decoy that buys time. A new limb grows back within months, though it will never be quite as strong.
