Fascinating facts about the California Sea Lion

• Male California sea lions can reach the size of a small SUV, growing up to 2.5-2.7 m (8.2-8.9 ft) long and weighing around 350 kg (770 lb), while the heaviest recorded individual tipped the scales at 660 kg (1,460 lb). Adult males on average are 2.2 m long and 275 kg, but can stretch to 2.4 m and 390 kg. This extreme dimorphism means a single male can dominate a breeding rookery, outcompeting rivals and securing more mates, directly shaping the colony's genetic future.
• When hunting, California sea lions zip through water like torpedoes, reaching speeds of about 10.8 km/h (6.7 mph) and, according to other reports, up to 15-20 mph. They can plunge to 274 m (899 ft) deep and stay submerged for as long as 9.9 minutes, though most dives are under 3 minutes.
• The species numbers in the hundreds of thousands: the U.S. or Pacific Temperate stock holds 238,000-241,000 individuals, the Western Baja California or Pacific Tropical stock 75,000-85,000, and the Gulf of California stock 31,393. While the Pacific coast population is near carrying capacity, the Gulf group has already shrunk by 20 % as of 2008.
• A dominant male will guard a territory for roughly 27 days, defending it with vocal barks and occasional bluff lunges. Some males, however, only hold a spot for about two weeks, and few manage longer stays. The length of tenure directly ties to a male's blubber reserves, the larger the male, the longer he can fast and protect his harem.
• In 2011 a sea lion named Ronan was filmed bobbing her head in perfect time with a musical beat, a phenomenon called rhythmic entrainment that, until then, had only been documented in humans, parrots and other vocal-mimicking birds. This shows the species can synchronize movements to external rhythms.
