• A greater cane rat can weigh up to 3.5 kg — roughly the size of a small dog — yet it spends most of its life hidden in dense reed beds where it's almost never seen. Local people in West Africa know them only by sound: a loud, machine-gun-like chattering at night that echoes across wetlands. They're one of Africa's largest rodents, but cameras trap them far less often than animals a tenth their size, because they've mastered invisibility in plain sight.
• Their teeth never stop growing, so they gnaw constantly to keep them sharp. But unlike beavers or porcupines, cane rats don't fell trees — they strip grass stems and sugar cane down to the base, leaving razor-clean cuts that look like they were made with scissors. A single rat can consume its own body weight in grass every week, which is why sugarcane farmers see them as agricultural ghosts that can devastate a crop overnight.
• Greater cane rats are one of the few African rodents regularly hunted and eaten by humans across their range, from West to East Africa. In Cameroon and Nigeria they're trapped and sold in markets; in parts of Southern Africa they're hunted for bushmeat. Yet their population remains stable across their entire sub-Saharan range — a sign they breed prolifically. They can have up to three litters a year, with 2–4 pups each, which means a wetland population can bounce back from heavy hunting pressure within months.
• They build elaborate burrow systems in riverbanks and wetland embankments, with multiple entrances and chambers that can extend several metres deep. These engineering projects get abandoned over time, then taken over by other species — monitor lizards, snakes, and smaller rodents move in once the original architect leaves. A single cane rat's burrow can shelter five other species, making them an accidental keystone engineer in African wetlands.
• Unlike most rodents, cane rats are semi-aquatic and excellent swimmers that dive to feed on submerged vegetation. They've been observed staying underwater for several minutes, using their dense fur for insulation in cool wetland water. This adaptation ties them to permanent water sources, which means wetland loss is their real threat — not predation or hunting. As swamps drain for agriculture, their habitat shrinks faster than their populations can adapt.
