• A male barasingha's antlers sprout up to 30 individual points — more than any other Asian deer — arranged in a crown so heavy that his neck muscles have evolved thicker than a wrestler's to hold the weight. During the rut, he thrashes these spikes through reed beds at dawn, each clash audible half a kilometre away, a sound that hasn't changed for 5 million years.
• The barasingha was hunted from 3,000 animals down to 66 individuals in a single wetland in central India by the 1970s — one of the narrowest escapes from extinction any large mammal has survived.
