About the Eastern Red Scorpionfish

The Eastern red scorpionfish, Scorpaena jacksoniensis, is a strikingly variable marine ray-finned fish that cloaks itself in a tapestry of bright red, light grey or mottled hues, often marked with small dark chest spots. Its body is armored with 12 dorsal spines, the fourth spine typically the longest, and 9 soft rays, while the pectoral fin bears 16-18 rays. A network of skin flaps, tentacles, and cycloid scales covers its head and underside, giving the fish a ragged, almost alien silhouette. Juveniles display a distinctive white-to-purplish blotch across the nape, and males can be identified by a large black spot on the soft-rayed portion of the dorsal fin. Growing slowly, individuals may take five years to reach 22 cm and a decade to attain 26 cm, with the largest recorded at 40 cm. In the temperate seas of southeastern Australia, from Caloundra in Queensland down to Jervis Bay in New South Wales, this benthic ambush predator lurks among rocks, corals and algae from shallow estuaries to depths of 73 m. It lies motionless, perfectly camouflaged, waiting for crustaceans and small fish to drift within striking range of its oversized mouth, which swallows prey whole. Its dorsal spines are venomous and can cause extremely painful envenomation in people.
