At just 30 cm long, including its tail, and weighing only 66-150 g, the eastern chipmunk. This tiny mass lets it dart through leaf litter and climb branches with the agility of a gymnast. Its compact size also means it can stash food in cheek pouches and slip into narrow burrow tunnels.
Eastern chipmunks breed twice a year, once from February to April and again from June to August, producing two litters of 2 to 5 altricial young each. After a 35-day gestation, newborns weigh a mere 3 g and stay hidden in underground nests for six to eight weeks before venturing out. Sexual maturity is reached at 187 days for females and 228 days for males.
Each chipmunk defends a home range that can stretch from 800 m² up to 6,000 m², with the central burrow system extending as far as 10 m of interconnected tunnels. Within this underground city, a single nest chamber measures about 30 cm across, while the surface entrance is only 5 cm wide, making it easy to hide from predators. Densities of 10 to 22 individuals per hectare show how many of these compact territories can coexist, creating a dense network of prey throughout deciduous forests.
A 30-year study of Michigan mammals shows eastern chipmunks are among the four southern-range species that have risen in numbers as the climate warms, likely because they thrive in the more fragmented forests created by logging and development. Their role as seed eaters, insect controllers, and fungal spore carriers.
An eastern chipmunk can fire off 130 trills per minute, a rapid alarm that warns nearby relatives of danger. Males often trill from as far as 100 m away, while females keep their calls within 10 m of their burrow.
