• A 1 metre-long spike juts from each shoulder — so sharp and perfectly angled that a single thrust can pierce a lion's skull. The East African oryx doesn't run from predators; it stands its ground and uses those horns like sword-and-board swordsmen who know how to fight three attackers at once. Lions learn to hunt them only through scarred trial and error, and most give up.
• In the Chalbi Desert where temperatures hit 50°C, the oryx's body runs cooler than its surroundings — a biological trick so effective that it sweats only when absolutely necessary, sipping water just once every 10 days or less.
