Dusky Toadlet

Fascinating facts about the Dusky Toadlet

• Spanning from just north of Sydney to mid-northern Queensland, this tiny ground-dweller packs a whole coast into a 30 mm (1.2 in) body, showing how evolution can squeeze a full amphibian lifestyle into a fingertip-sized package.
• A pale triangle starts at its eyes and an orange thigh patch appear on a dusky, bluish-tinged flank.
• Its skin is rough and warty, unlike the smooth cousin Uperoleia laevigata.
• When spring and summer heat rise, males gather at the water’s edge and belt out an "arrk" from the base of grass clumps, a simple call that still manages to be heard over dams, swamps, and roadside ditches.
• It lives in coastal forest, bushland, heathland, and both wet and dry sclerophyll forest.
