About the Calico Box Crab

The calico box crab, Hepatus epheliticus, is a small yet striking marine arthropod, typically reaching 5–7 cm across its carapace. Its name derives from a patchwork of mottled reds, oranges, and creamy whites that form irregular, almost watercolor‑like blotches across a smooth, slightly convex shell. These vivid patterns serve both as camouflage among the coral rubble and as a warning to potential predators, as the crab can secrete a mild toxin from its gill chambers when threatened. Its limbs are stout and banded, ending in sharp pincers that snap shut with surprising speed, allowing it to pry open the tiny crevices where it forages. Calico box crabs inhabit shallow tropical reefs and seagrass meadows throughout the western Atlantic, from the Caribbean to the coast of Brazil, favoring sandy substrates interspersed with shell debris. They are nocturnal omnivores, feeding on detritus, microalgae, and the occasional small mollusk, using chemosensory hairs on their legs to locate food in the dim light. A surprising trait of H. epheliticus is its ability to perform a rapid “box‑walking” gait: by locking its claws together, the crab creates a rigid, box‑shaped frame that it can roll across the seabed, a locomotion style that conserves energy and helps it escape sudden disturbances. This unique movement, combined with its vivid coloration, makes the calico box crab a captivating subject for both divers and researchers alike
