About the Garden Slender Salamander

The Garden slender salamander, Batrachoseps major, is a modestly sized plethodontid, stretching 3.2–5.9 cm from snout to tail, with 17-21 costal grooves and the distinctive four-toed hind feet of its genus. Its skin shifts among shades of gray, but the pale underside is the quickest field clue, especially when it shares leaf litter with the smaller, darker-vented B. nigriventris. Though its range is limited to the California Floristic Province, from the San Fernando Valley down to Ensenada and the offshore islands, within that corridor the salamander thrives, occupying coastal sage scrub, oak woodlands, conifer forests, and even the north-facing slopes of desert mountains. Remarkably, it has learned to live in the human-dominated Los Angeles Basin, slipping into garden mulch and shaded yard corners where moisture persists. In the wet winter months, when soil temperatures linger between 5 °C and 21 °C, B. major emerges to hunt, extending its long, sticky tongue to seize worms, insects, and other invertebrates, often taking longer than 30 minutes to swallow a single meal. Its activity wanes as summer heat dries the soil, driving it back into subterranean refuges. A surprising twist lies in its subspecies B. m. aridus, the desert slender salamander, which clings to limestone seeps shaded by California fan palms at 850 m elevation, an oasis that lets a typically moisture-loving amphibian survive in the Sonoran desert.
