• A dusky dolphin can spin its body like a corkscrew at speeds up to 6 metres per second, launching itself 6 metres clear out of the water — high enough to see the ocean horizon. They do this dozens of times in a row, not to flee predators but apparently for the sheer physics of it, in what scientists call 'porpoising.' No one fully knows why, but the energy cost suggests it matters more than play.
• Dusky dolphins hunt in coordinated teams that can exceed 1,000 individuals, herding fish schools into tight balls before taking turns to feed — a strategy called 'bait balling' that's otherwise rare outside killer whales and sea lions. A single feeding event can involve dolphins driving fish to the surface in a fraction of a second to trap them. They're born knowing this pattern; calves watch and learn from their mothers for years.
• Their brains are among the largest relative to body size of any dolphin, yet they live in the cold currents of the Southern Ocean where food is patchy and seasons are brutal.
