Dorado

Fascinating facts about the Dorado

• A single female can lay up to 2 million eggs near the surface, turning a short spring surge into a massive future population boom; it shows how a brief reproductive window fuels the species’ resilience.
• When the river warms to 20-28 °C (68-82 °F), dorados travel about 400 km (250 mi) upstream to spawn, a migration that links water temperature to the timing of the whole river ecosystem.
• The biggest recorded individual measured 1.3 m (51 in) long and weighed 34 kg (75 lb), dwarfing most other scaled fish in the Río de la Plata Basin and proving that size alone can dominate a freshwater food web.
• Juveniles as small as 30 cm (12 in) masquerade as the harmless Brycon hilarii, slipping into schools to ambush tiny tetras, an early-life disguise that illustrates the clever hunting tricks of a top predator.
• Females don’t mature until 4-5 years old, yet the species can live over 15 years, meaning each fish contributes many spawning cycles and highlighting why protecting older adults is crucial for population health.
