• Derby's woolly opossum is one of the few marsupials to evolve a fully prehensile tail — a muscular grappling hook that can support its entire body weight while hanging upside down from a branch. Unlike most opossums, this Central American species is a tree-dweller so committed it rarely touches the ground, spending its entire life in the canopy 30 metres above the forest floor. The tail has a bare patch of skin underneath, giving it friction grip like a primate's hand.
• A Derby's woolly opossum's pouch opens backward — toward its rear — rather than forward like a kangaroo's. This unusual anatomy is an adaptation for life in the trees: as the mother climbs and clings, her young stay sheltered against her body, protected by the pouch's orientation. Once they're too large for the pouch, joeys cling directly to her fur as she navigates branches, riding piggyback through the canopy.
• These opossums have a diet that shifts with the seasons: in the wet season they feast almost entirely on fruit, but when fruit becomes scarce they switch to hunting insects, particularly beetle larvae hidden deep in rotting wood. This dietary flexibility is rare among tree-dwelling marsupials and allowed them to thrive in rainforests where food availability swings dramatically throughout the year.
