• At up to 60 cm long and weighing as much as 8.5 kg, the Desmarest's hutia, yet it still scurries through mangrove roots and forest understory. Its head-and-body length spans 31-60 cm, the tail adds another 14-29 cm, and individuals tip the scales between 2.8 and 8.5 kg. This size makes it the largest living hutia.
• DNA from 19th-century museum skins shows the "Cuban hutia" actually comprises two species that split 1.75 million years ago when a deep-water channel divided the island. DNA evidence showed that these two animals split around 1.75 million years ago, long before humans arrived in what is today the Americas. A new study now shows … that the Cuban species is actually two distinct species: Desmarest's hutia on the eastern part of Cuba, and the western conga hutia (Capromys geayi) on the western side.
• In northern Cuba, populations tend to be centred on areas where there are abundant mangroves, while southern populations tend to favour a more terrestrial habitat. Those that live in the north tend to live in marshy areas where an abundance of red mangroves grow. Those in the south tend to be more terrestrial.
• Females give birth after a 110-140-day pregnancy, usually delivering one to three precocial pups that weigh about 230 g. They breed year-round with a gestation period of between 110 and 140 days (normally around 120 to 126 days), … normally produce between one and three young, weighing an average of 230 g (8.1 oz). The young are precocial, with fur, fully open eyes and the ability to walk. They are weaned at around five months and reach sexual maturity at around ten months.
• Its stomach is split into three chambers, the most intricate rodent gut known. The stomach is divided into three compartments by constrictions in the gut and is among the most complex of any rodent.
