• At just under half a meter long, the Tres Marias cottontail measures 437-480 mm from nose to tail, with ears only 57-64 mm tall and a skull 78-80 mm wide. Its body mass ranges from a feather-light 0.24 kg up to 2.7 kg, making it a medium-sized rabbit. Those compact dimensions let it hide in shallow depressions.
• The rabbit's entire world is less than 500 km² of dry tropical forest spread across four islands, from sea level up to about 350 m altitude. It prefers dense bushes and agaves that reach 3-4 m high, where it can rest under cover all day. Because the islands total under 190 sq mi, any loss of forest, whether to farms or a prison, shaves a sizable slice from its habitat. This tiny range means that habitat degradation instantly threatens the whole species, not just a local subpopulation.
• Unlike mainland cousins, this cottontail shows almost no fear of people; it will sit in shallow depressions under bushes until sunset before venturing out. On San Juanito the rabbits are especially reluctant to run, a trait that even earned a subspecies name meaning "to advance slowly." Their daytime stillness can last up to 15 minutes, making them virtually invisible to a casual observer.
• Only three native predators hunt the rabbit: the island's raccoon subspecies, red-tailed hawks and crested caracaras. However, introduced species such as white-tailed deer, goats, pigs and black rats now compete for the same vegetation and even damage the underbrush the rabbit relies on for shelter.
• Both Mexican authorities and the IUCN list the rabbit as Endangered, citing its tiny, fragmented habitat and worsening quality. A 1976 survey noted "low on all but one island," and a 1987 report found it only on San Juanito, highlighting a rapid contraction. Recent assessments say the population has dropped about 50 % in the past decade, a trend expected to continue without protection. Conservationists therefore urge hunting bans, new reserves on María Madre and San Juanito, and long-term studies to fill the glaring gaps in its life-history knowledge.
