The crab-eating mongoose roams from the foothills of northeastern India through Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and reaches southern China and Taiwan, even popping up in rare sightings in Bangladesh. It can live from sea level up to 1,800 m (5,900 ft). In Nepal it prefers subtropical evergreen and moist deciduous forests, while in India it has been recorded in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
These mongooses are most active at dawn and dusk, often forming small parties of up to four individuals that hunt along stream banks. Observers note they are "supposed to be good swimmers," a skill that lets them chase fish, crabs, snails and even amphibians in shallow water. Their diet is a grab-everything menu: fish, snails, frogs, rodents, birds, reptiles, insects and, despite the name, crabs. This opportunistic feeding strategy lets them thrive in both pristine forest streams and nearby agricultural fields where water sources persist.
A crab-eating mongoose has a body measuring 47.7 to 55.8 cm (18.8 to 22.0 in) and a bushy tail adding another 28 to 34 cm (11 to 13 in). It tips the scales at 1.1 to 2.5 kg (2.4 to 5.5 lb).
The International Union for Conservation of Nature rates the crab-eating mongoose as Least Concern. Yet it is also listed in CITES Appendix III.
