This dietary flexibility means they can survive when fruit is scarce, but it also means they need a larger home range; a group of 30 monkeys might range across 1,000 hectares of forest.
• Female woolly monkeys are highly choosy about parenthood — they give birth to a single infant only every 3 to 4 years, one of the longest birth intervals of any primate besides humans. A mother nurses her infant for up to a year and carries it constantly, then leaves it in the care of other group members while she forages. This extreme investment means a female produces only 5 or 6 offspring in her entire lifetime, making the species vulnerable to hunting pressure.
• The woolly monkey's range has shrunk by over 60% in the last 50 years. They were hunted intensively for meat and the pet trade throughout the 20th century, and they cannot survive in fragmented forests — they need continuous canopy to move between feeding sites. In Brazil and Peru, some populations have been hunted to near extinction, and those that remain are trapped in shrinking islands of rainforest, unable to find mates or new fruit sources.
