Fascinating facts about the Sumatran Rhinoceros

• Fewer than 80 Sumatran rhinos exist in the wild today — so few that scientists can name most of them. This makes them rarer than giant pandas, which number around 1,800. Their extinction is happening in real time, with fewer than 40 individuals believed alive on Borneo and perhaps 30–40 on Sumatra. Poaching for their horns, valued in traditional medicine, has shrunk a population that once numbered in the thousands.
• A Sumatran rhino's horn is made of keratin — the same protein in your fingernails — yet poachers will kill a 2,000-kilogram animal for a growth that would regenerate if left alone. Unlike African rhinos, which have horns that never stop growing, the Sumatran rhino's horns eventually stop extending. A single horn can fetch $30,000 on the black market, more than ten times the annual income of a subsistence farmer in Southeast Asia, which is why conservation requires not just protection but economic alternatives.
• The Sumatran rhino is the only Asian rhino with two horns, and it is the smallest rhino species — weighing around 600–950 kilograms, less than half the mass of an African elephant. It is also the most solitary, spending most of its life alone in dense rainforest so thick that researchers track populations by following mud wallows and dung rather than spotting individuals. This solitude, which helped it hide from predators for millions of years, now makes breeding in the wild almost impossible — females may never find mates across hundreds of kilometres of fragmented forest.
• In 2019, the last known male Sumatran rhino in Malaysia died, leaving only females. Scientists are now attempting to save the species through in vitro fertilisation and genetic rescue, a race against extinction that has never been won for a large mammal. A single calf born in a laboratory would be a milestone in conservation science, yet even that would not guarantee the species survives — a population of fewer than 80 individuals has already lost so much genetic diversity that inbreeding and disease are almost inevitable.
• The Sumatran rhino eats leaves and fruits from the forest floor, a browser that depends on dense, undisturbed rainforest. Over the past 40 years, 80 per cent of Sumatra's forests have been cleared for palm oil plantations and logging concessions. The rhinos that remain live in forest fragments so small and isolated that they cannot move between them, trapped in shrinking islands of jungle. Their survival now depends entirely on whether humans can protect and reconnect the remaining patches of rainforest — a question that will be answered within the next decade.
