• A waxbill's beak is the colour of a ripe strawberry and works like a precision seed-cracker — it can split open seeds smaller than a grain of rice, extracting the kernel in under a second. This tiny red tool has made the common waxbill one of Africa's most successful seed-eaters, able to exploit food sources that larger birds simply cannot access.
• Waxbills are built for life in the open: their bodies weigh just 13 grams — lighter than a smartphone — yet they can fly 200 kilometres in a day when food runs dry, and they do it in flocks of thousands that move like a single organism across the savanna. A drought that would starve a heavier bird becomes just another migration.
• When a male waxbill courts a female, he performs an elaborate dance holding a grass stem in his beak, leaping vertically up to 30 centimetres into the air while singing — a behaviour ornithologists call 'pivoting'.
