• A tiny bird the size of a matchbox, the common waxbill measures just 9.5-13 centimetres long and weighs only 6-11 g, yet it occupies an estimated 10,000,000 km² across Africa and far-flung islands. Its bright red, wax-like bill gives the species its name and makes it a favorite in cages, helping humans spread it worldwide. This tiny body-size combined with a massive range shows how a modest finch can become a global coloniser.
• When building a nest, the waxbill weaves a large ball of criss-crossed grass stems with a long downward-pointing entrance tube, sometimes adding a second "cock's nest" on top where the male sleeps. Four to seven white eggs are laid, incubated for 11 to 13 days, and the chicks fledge after 17 to 21 days. This elaborate architecture and rapid development are characteristic of the species, which can raise several broods a year.
• In its native savannas the waxbill feeds mainly on grass and millet seeds, especially the year-round guinea grass (Panicum maximum). It forages in flocks that can number hundreds or even thousands, clinging to stems with long spindly claws while picking seeds.
• Escaped or deliberately released birds have founded populations on many islands, from Saint Helena and the Seychelles to the Hawaiian Islands and the Azores. In Europe they are now common in Portugal and spreading through Spain, even appearing in major cities like Madrid and Barcelona in the last ten years. This rapid, human-assisted expansion illustrates how a species with a high reproductive rate can quickly become a permanent resident far from its African roots.
