• A warthog runs backwards into danger. When threatened, it charges its burrow in reverse at 50 km/h, rear end first, so it can pivot and gore attackers with tusks that grow to 63 centimetres long. Lions and hyenas have learned to expect this — they often flip the warthog mid-charge or wait for it to exhaust itself backing away.
• Warthogs kneel to eat. Every time they graze, they drop onto their front legs and shuffle along on padded, calloused knees — a posture so distinctive that young warthogs are born with thickened knee skin, as if their ancestors knew what was coming. They can spend hours this way, processing up to 5 kg of grass daily, yet stand upright to browse leaves and bark.
