• A nightingale sings over 1,000 different song types — more than any other European songbird — and males spend their first year just listening to tutors, memorising phrases the way a child learns language. If a young male grows up in acoustic isolation, he'll sing a crude, unrecognisable version his whole life. Their brain actually shrinks by 30% each winter and regrows in spring, but the learned song stays locked in memory.
• During spring migration, a male nightingale will sing for up to 16 hours a day without stopping, often through the night when rivals are quiet — hence the name. A single bird can be heard from 500 metres away in still air. This exhausting marathon happens because females only breed with males who defend the richest territory, and song is his only weapon against competitors he'll never fight.
• Nightingales arrive in Europe in late April after crossing the Sahara Desert non-stop, a 2,000 km journey with no food or water that takes 40 hours. They breed for just 4 months, then turn around and do it again — spending half their year in transit between West Africa and Central Europe. A bird weighs only 20 grams, roughly the same as a house mouse.
• Female nightingales are nearly silent and cryptically brown, while males wear drab plumage too — yet they're hunted for the cage-bird trade more than any other European songbird, with tens of thousands trapped annually in southern Europe. The trade is partly legal, partly not, and it threatens to empty breeding populations in some regions despite the species being classified as secure overall.
• A nightingale's song contains ultrasonic frequencies above 15 kHz that humans cannot hear, but females can — these high notes likely convey information about the male's fitness and age that low notes cannot. When researchers played recordings of naturally-sung songs versus the same songs filtered to remove ultrasound, females showed no interest in the edited versions, proof that an entire layer of meaning happens in frequencies beyond our hearing.
