Fascinating facts about the Australian King Parrot

• Australian king parrots sometimes interbreed with the red-winged parrot, producing natural hybrids. These hybrids have been recorded at Bell in south-eastern Queensland, a location within the king parrot's eastern Australian range that extends from Cooktown in Queensland down to Port Campbell in Victoria.
• The species measures about 43 cm in length, a size that includes its long, broad tail. Adults of both sexes share this overall length, giving the bird a noticeable presence in the forest canopy. The male's vivid red head, breast and lower undersides sit atop this body length, while the green wings and tail complete the striking colour pattern that makes the king parrot easy to identify in its humid upland habitats.
• The northern subspecies A. s. minor is about 5 cm shorter in overall length than the nominate form. It occurs at the northern limit of the species' range in Queensland.
• Occasionally a king parrot will be born with patches of plumage that lack melanin, causing those feathers to appear orange to yellow instead of the usual colours. These melanin-deficient individuals are rare enough that they stand out dramatically when seen among the typical scarlet and green birds of the species. The unusual hue is confined to the affected patches, leaving the rest of the bird's plumage unchanged.
• When king parrots feed alongside other birds, they sit near the bottom of the pecking order at seed stations. Observations show that the typical sequence at a seed tray starts with cockatoos, followed by rainbow lorikeets, magpies, corellas, galahs, then the king parrot, and finally the crimson rosella. This ranking means the king parrot often has to wait for the larger or more aggressive species to finish before it can take a bite.
