The Eurasian siskin shows an unusual migration, moving south in massive flocks only every few winters. These irregular southward movements can swell the overwintering numbers especially on the Iberian Peninsula, where abundant food allows the newcomers to thrive.
Siskins are highly social birds that form small, cohesive flocks, particularly in autumn and winter. Within these groups lower-ranking individuals regularly regurgitate food to dominant members, a behaviour known as allofeeding. This reciprocal feeding strengthens flock cohesion and reveals a clear hierarchical structure among the birds.
In captivity a Eurasian siskin can reach an age of eleven to fourteen years, far exceeding its short wild lifespan. In natural conditions the species is estimated to survive only two or three years, reflecting the high mortality pressures it faces outside human care. The extended captive longevity highlights how protected environments can dramatically increase its life expectancy.
Worldwide there are roughly twenty to thirty-six million siskins. The European population is estimated at between 2.7 and 15 million pairs.
