About the Common Kingsnake

The common kingsnake, Lampropeltis getula, is a sleek, glossy serpent that glides through the southeastern United States with a coat of black, blue-black, or dark brown overlaid by 23 to 52 stark white, chain-like rings. Size varies dramatically across its range: the speckled kingsnake subspecies averages just 91.5 cm (36 in) in snout-to-vent length, while the nominate L. g. getula can reach an average of 107 cm (42 in), and exceptional individuals have been recorded at a total length of 208.2 cm (82 in). Its weight spans from a modest 285 g (10.1 oz) in a 87.2 cm (34.3 in) specimen to a hefty 2,268 g (80 oz) in those exceeding 153 cm (60 in). In the wild, this adaptable predator favors open habitats, grasslands, chaparral, oak woodlands, abandoned farms, deserts, low mountains, and any riparian zone, from swamps to streams, where thick leaf litter and dense shrubbery provide concealment. Researchers observed that 79 % of tracked snakes spent most of their time hidden beneath soil and litter, emerging to hunt a diet that includes venomous copperheads, coral snakes, rattlesnakes, and non-venomous garters, as well as amphibians, turtle eggs, bird eggs, lizards, and small mammals. A remarkable trait is its immunity to the venom of its prey; the king-snake clamps down on the jaws of venomous snakes, avoiding bites while safely consuming them, a behavior that underscores its role as a top-level regulator in snake communities.
