• A caterpillar the size of a grain of rice feeds on nothing but algae — no other butterfly larva in Southeast Asia does this. Most hedge blue caterpillars graze on leaves like tiny herbivores, but Acytolepis puspa's young are algae specialists, scraping films of green off rocks and branches in humid forest understories. This shift from leaf to algae is so rare it suggests the species found a food source competitors couldn't exploit, a survival strategy that paid off for millions of years.
• The Common Hedge Blue male's wings shimmer electric blue, but only under certain angles — flip the light and they vanish to dull grey. This isn't a trick: the blue comes from how microscopic ridges on the wing scatter light, not from pigment. Females are almost entirely brown, invisible against bark. That difference — one sex shining like sapphire, the other invisible — evolved because males use their flash to find mates in dense forest shadows where sight is precious.
• At rest, the Common Hedge Blue folds its wings roof-like over its body, hiding every speck of blue from predators. But the undersides of its hindwings carry two dark spots ringed in white — eyespots. When a bird strikes, it aims for those fake eyes near the wing tips, missing the body and head. The butterfly escapes with a torn wing but lives. This is the difference between "shot at" and "dead."
• These butterflies cluster by the hundreds on wet soil and dung, drinking not for water but for salt and amino acids their bodies can't make. A single male might visit the same muddy spot for weeks, fuelling the flight muscles that will power his territory patrol. In Southeast Asian rainforests, a muddy riverbank can become a gathering place for dozens of butterfly species, a natural salt lick invisible to most hikers.
• The caterpillar of Acytolepis puspa lives inside an ant's nest, attended and guarded by worker ants that treat it like one of their own. The caterpillar secretes a chemical cocktail that smells like a colony member, hijacking the ants' instinct to nurse their young. In return, the caterpillar offers nothing — pure parasitism dressed as family. Once it pupates, it escapes the nest as a butterfly, leaving the ants none the wiser.
