• The ambiguous moth measures 21-25 mm across the wings. When it settles it tucks its hindwings tightly beneath the forewings, so the wings form a clean triangular outline, and its forewings may be brown, slightly purple or grey, all sharing a dark straight band that accentuates the shape.
• Male ambiguous moths carry a tiny notch on the distal edge of each forewing, a feature that is absent in females. At the base of this notch a distinct black spot marks the notch's head, providing a clear visual cue of sex. This sexual dimorphism is confined to the wing margin and does not affect the overall colour pattern of the moth. Females lack both the notch and the accompanying spot, giving them a smoother wing edge.
• In Connecticut the ambiguous moth completes two full generations each year, while in Missouri the climate allows several broods to develop within a single season. Adults are active from April through September, the window during which these generations emerge and reproduce. The extended flight period enables the species to exploit the warm months across its range.
• Its distribution stretches from Wisconsin across to Maine and down through Florida to Texas, covering a broad swath of the United States. Within this range the moth inhabits a wide variety of environments, showing particular affinity for shrubby fields where low vegetation provides shelter. Woodlands also host regular populations, offering leaf litter that supports its larval food plants.
