• A common gallinule's feet are so absurdly long and thin—with toes stretching up to 5 centimetres each—that they can walk across lily pads and floating vegetation without breaking through. Their weight, usually under 400 grams, distributes across those stretched toes like a living snowshoe. This design lets them hunt and nest in wetlands where no other bird their size can safely venture, and it's why they're called "marsh hens" across South America despite being no relation to chickens.
• Chicks of the common gallinule leave the nest within hours of hatching and can feed themselves within days, yet they stay under their parents' care for up to 13 weeks—longer than most songbirds. Parents teach them which plants are poisonous, how to dive for invertebrates, and how to navigate territorial disputes with neighbouring families.
