• A butterfly that drinks tree wounds instead of flowers: the common bluebottle has evolved taste receptors on its feet that detect fermenting sap oozing from damaged bark. It lands on a bleeding tree, tastes with its feet, then unfurls a needle-thin proboscis to drink nutrients no flower can offer. This shift away from nectar freed it to thrive in rainforest depths where flowering plants are rare.
• Its wings contain no blue pigment — the electric-blue color you see is a trick of physics. Transparent layers in the wing scale refract light the same way a prism does, scattering only blue wavelengths back to your eye. Rotate the wing 90 degrees and the blue vanishes. This structural colour costs the butterfly nothing to make and never fades, unlike pigments that degrade under UV light.
• Males patrol the forest floor in the early morning, searching for females by detecting a pheromone plume invisible to humans but potent enough to trigger mating from 50 metres away. Once a male locates a female, he lands and performs a wing-flutter dance — a 2-second display that tells her whether he's genetically compatible. Females reject up to 70% of suitors this way.

The bluebottle caterpillar has evolved detoxifying enzymes that neutralise these toxins and sequester them in its own body, becoming toxic to predators. A bird that eats one learns instantly: this stripe pattern means poison.
• It completes its entire life cycle — egg to adult — in just 28 days under rainforest warmth. With no winter dormancy and food available year-round, multiple generations emerge monthly, creating overlapping populations that bloom and crash with seasonal rains. In three months of continuous breeding, a single female's lineage can number in the millions.
