Fascinating facts about the Cheetah

• Cheetahs can sprint from 0 to 93-104 km/h (58-65 mph), a speed range that rivals a sports car on a highway. Their thigh muscles are 50% heavier than predicted for a cat of their size, giving them the raw power to launch that acceleration. Yet they can only keep this burst for a few hundred metres before overheating, because their mitochondrial volume is just 3.7% of muscle fiber volume, far lower than the 6.5-10.7% seen in dogs and ponies. This extreme specialization makes the cheetah the ultimate sprint predator, but also limits endurance and forces it to hunt in short, high-risk chases.

Females typically give birth to three or four cubs that weigh only 150-300 g at birth, roughly the weight of a small apple. Cubs stay hidden for eight weeks, nursing for about four months before weaning, and become independent around 20 months. In the wild, litter sizes average 2.6 cubs, but up to eight have been recorded in captivity, showing how flexible their breeding can be when conditions allow.

The species also boasts the largest frontal sinuses of any felid, likely cooling inhaled air during those high-speed chases where body temperature can hit 38.6 °C (101.5 °F).
