• A cheetah's spine is so flexible it bends like a whip during the 120 km/h sprint — each vertebra rotates slightly, adding metres to every stride. The whole skeleton is built for speed over power: hollow bones, a flexible spine, and leg muscles that make up barely 7% of their body weight. This design lets them accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3 seconds, but it comes with a cost: cheetahs can't wrestle prey or defend a kill. They must eat within 30 minutes or risk losing dinner to a lion or hyena.
• A cheetah's eyes sit high and forward on its skull, giving it a 210-degree field of vision — they see a running gazelle from 5 kilometres away in daylight. But this gift is a curse in darkness: they have almost no night vision, so they hunt only in daylight when their eyes have a crushing advantage. Every hunt is a bet that they'll spot prey before sunset or starve.
• Female cheetahs have no pride, no pack, no sisterhood. They raise cubs alone for 18 months in a landscape ruled by male lions and hyenas, then vanish from their lives forever. Only male cheetahs form bonds — brothers stay together for life, sometimes recruiting a third to improve their odds of holding territory. A female will never meet her own offspring again after they leave.
• Cheetahs can't roar; their voice box is locked into a purr, a chirp, and a bleating call. Instead of sound, they communicate through scent — marking grass and rocks with urine every few hundred metres to tell rivals 'this territory is mine.' This silent approach keeps them invisible to prey during the stalk, but it also means a cheetah can be 100 metres from a lion and never know until the attack begins.
• Fewer than 7,000 African cheetahs remain in the wild, and they're vanishing from 90% of their historic range. The crisis isn't poaching—it's habitat loss and prey depletion. In Namibia, cheetahs can kill 200 calves from livestock herds each year, so farmers shot thousands before conservation efforts took hold. Today, a single protected area like the Serengeti holds a quarter of all wild cheetahs on Earth.
