Caracal (Caracal caracal) lives in desert savanna across Africa, Middle East, Central Asia. It feeds on small mammals birds. Its conservation status is Least Concern.
Fascinating facts about the Caracal
- Caracals can launch themselves over 3 m (9.8 ft) straight into the air to snatch birds mid-flight, a feat made possible by their disproportionately long, muscular hind legs. This vertical leap lets them turn a fleeting bird into a meal before it even realizes it's been spotted, showing how evolution tuned their anatomy for aerial hunting.
- The caracal's range stretches from sub-Saharan Africa across the Middle East into Central Asia and the arid fringes of Pakistan and north-western India, encompassing three recognized subspecies: the Southern caracal in southern and east Africa, the Northern caracal in north-west Africa, and the Asiatic caracal in Asia. This broad distribution across deserts, savannas and mountains illustrates the species' adaptability to vastly different habitats while still retaining its iconic ear-tufts.
- Male caracals defend territories that can dwarf a city: in Israel males average 220 km² (85 sq mi) while females hold 57 km² (22 sq mi); in Saudi Arabia male ranges stretch from 270 km² up to 1,116 km² (104-431 sq mi). Even in more temperate African parks females occupy 4.0-6.5 km² (1.5-2.5 sq mi). Such expansive home ranges for a 10-kg cat reveal how low prey density and arid conditions force them to roam far to meet their needs.
- Caracals reach sexual maturity by one year of age, with females capable of breeding after just seven to ten months, yet successful mating usually occurs at 12-15 months. After a gestation of 68-81 days (about two to three months) a litter of one to six kittens is born, most often between October and February.
- Molecular studies show the caracal split from its closest relative, the African golden cat, between 2.93 and 1.19 million years ago, while the whole Caracal lineage (caracal, golden cat, serval) diverged from other felids 11.56-6.66 million years ago after an ancestor arrived in Africa 8.5-5.6 million years ago.
