• The last wild Asiatic cheetahs number fewer than fifty individuals, divided into three isolated subpopulations. These groups are spread across a central plateau that covers about 140,000 km² of arid Iran. Their extreme scarcity places the subspecies on the brink of disappearance, with each fragment vulnerable to local threats. Conservation efforts now focus on linking these pockets to prevent total loss.
• Historically the Asiatic cheetah roamed a vast belt from the Arabian Peninsula and the Near East across the Caspian region, the Transcaucasus, the Kyzylkum Desert and into northern South Asia. Throughout the twentieth century it vanished from every part of this range, becoming locally extinct everywhere except Iran. The loss of such extensive habitat contributed to its present critical status. Today only the Iranian desert refuges host the surviving individuals.
• Genetic research shows that the Asiatic cheetah split from its African relatives tens of thousands of years ago. A five-year phylogeographic study found the two lineages diverged between 32,000 and 67,000 years ago, making the Asian population genetically distinct. This long-standing separation underpins its classification as a separate subspecies. The ancient divergence highlights the irreplaceable evolutionary heritage of the remaining cats.
• In a two-year survey, 84 cheetahs were sighted across 14 protected sites in Iran. Camera traps confirmed the identity of 82 of those animals.
• Iran's cheetahs are considered autochthonous, monophyletic and the last remaining representative of the Asiatic subspecies. They constitute the only surviving Asiatic cheetah lineage.
