• At 120 km/h, the Asiatic cheetah hits the same top speed as its African cousins, but it hunts differently. Desert prey are scattered and unpredictable, so Asiatic cheetahs evolved larger home ranges — a single male may patrol 1,500 square kilometres of open steppe, five times larger than African cheetahs. This makes them invisible; it also makes them vulnerable to roads and fences that carve up their territory.
• The Asiatic cheetah's coat is slightly darker and its build marginally stockier than African subspecies, adaptations to colder, harsher terrain. But genetics reveal something stranger: this population separated from African cheetahs roughly 32,000 years ago, making the two subspecies nearly as distinct as lions and tigers in evolutionary time. They are relics of an older world, and losing them would erase millions of years of independent evolution.
