• Cape porcupines are among the world's biggest rodents, rivalled only by the capybara and the Eurasian and North American beavers in body mass. Adults measure between 63 and 81 cm from head to the base of the tail, with an additional 11-20 cm of tail. Their weight normally ranges from 10 to 24 kg, and exceptionally large individuals can reach 30 kg. This size places them at the top end of African rodent diversity.
• The spines on the Cape porcupine's tail are hollow, allowing the animal to shake them and produce a rattling sound when it feels threatened. This audible warning can startle predators and give the porcupine a chance to retreat into its burrow. The tail itself adds 11-20 cm to the animal's total length, and the hollow quills are part of a broader armour of spines up to 50 cm long that cover its back and flanks.
• A mated pair of Cape porcupines typically controls a home range of at least 67 to 203 ha, depending on local habitat and food availability. Both sexes scent-mark the territory, but males tend to patrol and protect it more actively, ensuring the pair's resources remain secure.
• Newborn Cape porcupines weigh between 300 and 440 g and emerge with soft quills that stiffen within a few hours, giving them immediate protection. They arrive after a gestation of about 94 days, usually as a single infant though litters can contain up to three young. Their incisors are already erupted at birth, while the remaining teeth start to appear at two weeks and are fully grown by about 25 months.
• Cape porcupines enjoy a lifespan that far exceeds most rodents, living about ten years in the wild and up to twenty years when cared for in captivity. This longevity is notable given their size and reproductive schedule, as they reach sexual maturity after just one year of rapid growth. Their extended life allows them to maintain long-term monogamous pair bonds and defend sizeable home ranges over many seasons.
