• A Cape gerbil's hind legs are built like a kangaroo's — they're twice as long as their front legs and packed with tendons that store elastic energy like coiled springs. This lets them bounce 2 metres across open ground in a single leap, a trick that confuses predators trying to predict where they'll land next. Speed and unpredictability matter more than raw distance when a martial eagle is diving at 240 km/h.
• Cape gerbils are immune to plant poisons that would kill most rodents. They feast on seeds from toxic plants like castor beans, breaking down alkaloids in their liver that paralyse other animals. This dietary superpower means they can exploit food sources across the savanna that competitors simply cannot touch, giving them an edge during droughts when edible seed becomes scarce.
• A single Cape gerbil colony can consume 15 tonnes of seed annually — enough to noticeably thin plant recruitment across their patch of savanna. Their burrowing networks, which can sprawl across 40 square metres and plunge 2 metres deep, aerate soil and scatter seeds far from the parent plant. They're ecosystem engineers disguised as dinner for snakes.
• Unlike most rodents, male Cape gerbils stay with their mates and help raise pups. A father gerbil huddles with newborns to regulate their body temperature (pups are born naked and blind), retrieves strays who wander, and defends the burrow while the mother hunts.
