• A topknot of six feathers crowns the California quail's head — each one precisely aligned like a mohawk that swivels independently to signal alarm or calm to the flock. When a predator approaches, the leading bird's topknot rises first, and within seconds the entire covey reads the signal and bolts. It's a biological early-warning system that works faster than a text alert.
• California quails roost in tight pyramids at night, with birds stacking three or four high on branches to share warmth and keep watch. The birds on the outside face outward; those buried in the center sleep deeply while sentries rotate every few minutes.
