Fascinating facts about the California Ground Squirrel
When a rattlesnake rattles its tail, a California ground squirrel may heat and swish its own tail, a behavior called tail-waving that lasts longer and faster when danger is near. In 30 of 45 recorded snake encounters, this display stopped the snake in its tracks, and rattlesnakes were 1.6 times more likely to abandon an attack after seeing an adult wave its tail. The heat-filled signal tells the snake the squirrel is too swift to catch, reducing lethal encounters.
Female California ground squirrels chew on shed rattlesnake skins and lick themselves and their pups, a ritual that masks their scent with snake odor. Pups gain this chemical camouflage before they are one month old, a stage when they are otherwise completely vulnerable to venom. By borrowing the snake's own smell, the young gain a hidden layer of protection during their most defenseless weeks.

In early spring, a female California ground squirrel can produce one litter of five to eleven pups after a gestation of about one month. The newborns open their eyes at five weeks, molt at eight weeks, and reach sexual maturity at one year, allowing a single female to potentially contribute to population growth each year for up to six years of life.
